The Best of Antifragile: Notes on Nassim Taleb's Classic
My favourite highlights from Antifragile—why volatility, stressors, and randomness can be features, not bugs.

Antifragility is the trait behind everything that survives time
Antifragility goes beyond resilience or robustness. The resilient resists shocks and stays the same; the antifragile gets better. It’s behind evolution, culture, revolutions, corporate survival, even our own existence as a species.
The antifragile loves randomness and uncertainty, including a certain class of errors. It lets us deal with the unknown and do things well without fully understanding them. Taleb would rather be “dumb and antifragile than extremely smart and fragile.”
Instead of predicting events, ask which things gain from disorder
It’s easier to detect fragility than to predict specific shocks. Anything with more upside than downside from randomness is antifragile; the reverse is fragile.
Suppressing randomness weakens systems
We’ve been fragilizing the economy, our health, political life, and education by suppressing volatility. Complex systems need stressors to endure. Mother Nature isn’t “safe”—it’s aggressive in destroying and replacing. The planet has endured billions of years because it benefits from stressors.
You don’t need to predict rare events—just avoid fragility
You can’t reliably predict which remote event will happen, but you can identify fragile structures that will break when something does happen. Ask whether a person, company, or system stands to gain from volatility—or if it will shatter the moment randomness hits.
Embrace asymmetry
We can detect antifragility by testing for asymmetry. Does a project, investment, or habit have limited downside and significant upside? If yes, it’s likely antifragile. The opposite means fragility.
Plan for shocks, don’t paper over them
The antifragile prepares for shocks by benefiting from them. Instead of smoothing every bump, build in redundancy, options, and small experiments. Let systems learn and strengthen through stress.
